Visual Evoked Potential (VEP)
Visual Evoked Potential (VEP) is a non-invasive neurodiagnostic test that evaluates the functional integrity of the visual pathway from the retina → optic nerve → optic chiasm → optic tract → visual cortex (occipital lobe).
The test records the electrical responses of the brain generated in response to visual stimuli, helping detect disorders affecting the optic nerve and visual pathways.
Purpose of the VEP Test
- Assess optic nerve function
- Detect demyelination or damage of the visual pathway
- Diagnose sensorineural hearing loss
- Support diagnosis of multiple sclerosis
- Evaluate optic neuritis
- Monitor disease progression or treatment response
- Assess vision in non-cooperative patients (infants, disabled patients)
- Detect visual pathway lesions
Preparation Before VEP Test
- Wash hair and avoid oils or gels
- Wear corrective glasses if prescribed
- Avoid eye fatigue before the test
- Remain alert and focused during testing
