Somatosensory Evoked Potential (SSEP)
Somatosensory Evoked Potential (SSEP) is a non-invasive neurophysiological test used to evaluate the sensory pathways that carry signals from the peripheral nerves → spinal cord → brainstem → sensory cortex.
The test records the electrical responses of the brain and spinal cord following controlled sensory stimulation, usually of the median nerve (upper limb) or posterior tibial nerve (lower limb).
Purpose of the SSEP Test
- Assess integrity of sensory pathways
- Detect spinal cord dysfunction
- Evaluate brain and brainstem sensory function
- Diagnose demyelinating disorders
- Assess patients with numbness, tingling, or sensory loss
- Monitor spinal cord function during surgery
- Evaluate coma or altered consciousness
- Assess prognosis after neurological injury
Preparation Before SSEP Test
- Bathe before the test
- Avoid applying oils or lotions
- Wear comfortable clothing
