Electroretinography (ERG)
Electroretinography (ERG) is a non-invasive diagnostic test that measures the electrical responses of the retina (the light-sensitive layer at the back of the eye) to visual stimuli.
The retina converts light into electrical signals, and the ERG test records these responses to assess retinal function, especially the activity of photoreceptor cells (rods and cones) and inner retinal layers.
Purpose of the SSEP Test
- Evaluate retinal function objectively
- Diagnose inherited retinal diseases
- Assess unexplained vision loss
- Differentiate retinal disorders from optic nerve diseases
- Monitor progression of retinal conditions
- Evaluate retinal toxicity from medications
- Assess retinal function in infants and non-cooperative patients
Preparation Before SSEP Test
- Avoid eye makeup
- Arrange transportation if pupils are dilated
- Inform the doctor about eye conditions or medications
- Follow instructions regarding contact lens use
